Getting A Good Nights Sleep

They don't call it beauty sleep for nothing. Getting a full night's sleep gives your body time to repair and reboot, ready for a new day. Ironically, I'm writing this tucked up in bed, sipping my tea and yawning profusely. It's a normal evening for me, but there are times when I watch the hours pass by struggling to get to sleep. So as the days get shorter here are a few tips to help you get the rest you need.

No caffeine after a certain time

This may seem like a fairly obvious thing to do, but monitoring your caffeine intake can really help. I found myself drinking coffee around 5 pm at work and I was bouncing off the walls when I got home. Now I make sure that lunchtime is my cut-off point and then I opt for herbal tea's. Try keeping a diary to figure out when your own cut-off point should be.

Start to unwind

In today's technological world, our laptops and phones keep our minds stimulated. Some night's I can be scrolling through twitter well into the early hours of the morning. It's an absolute nightmare. So to remind myself to unwind I've set a daily alarm on iCalander. I put my phone on charge, get into bed and either read a book or just lay down for a bit until I fall asleep.

Sleep aids

For those of you that need a little something extra to help you get to sleep, why not try Valerian tea? One tea bag, an hour before bed helps you to relax and unwind. Another favourite of mine is the Le Colvent des Minimes Relaxing Recipe Goodnight Pillow Mist - £12.00*. You can either spray it once directly onto the pillow five minutes before you go to sleep. Or around the room for a relaxing atmosphere.

Fresh sheets

This is my secret weapon if I have to get up super early. Having clean sheets is the most relaxing thing for me. I run a hot bath, change into my favourite pyjamas and embrace it! Another thing to consider is the colour or pattern. I know it sounds daft but I've always slept better in clean white linen, it helps to clear my mind and relax me. I know some people that have black sheets to minimise the light in their room. Change it up a bit until you find what's best for you.

Invest in luxury bedding

The day you discover your ideal pillow is the day you'll never look back. I used to think thin pillows were my thing until I bought two filled with duck feathers. Oh my goodness, how could I have been so wrong all these years? As soon as my head hits them I'm in heaven. Pay attention to department store sales and grab yourself a bargain!

The next step for me is purchasing some silk pillowcases. Apparently it's better for your skin, hair and ultimately your sleeping patterns.

How do you unwind before bed? Do you have any tips?
