Switching from Coffee to Tea...

I remember a time when a cup of tea was my drink of choice. At age 17 that changed. I remember waking up one morning and feeling rather grown up all of a sudden. I poured myself a steaming cup of black coffee and never looked back. Almost five years later I've taken a serious look at my caffeine intake and have decided to return to my adolescent love of tea.

Here is a bit of background for you. I would drink between 4-6 cups of coffee a day, every day. I started getting what I like to call 'the shakes'. I've become a bit anxious, stressed and finding it hard to stop and smell the roses. I was a caffeine induced blur. And so I sought to change that.

I've always had a stash of various teas in my kitchen, so when it came to put the kettle on I was spoilt for choice. The first week was incredibly hard, I thought I wasn't going to make it through the day. After a few days I had to take a nap every now and again just so that I could keep going. But after sticking to my guns I have now fully made the switch. I have this overwhelming clarity and now I'm finally able to slow down and appreciate the day.

If you have been thinking about making the switch these are a few points to remember.

Having someone to help you makes every aspect a lot easier. Why not try offering to make someone else a cup of tea as well? Some mornings I fill up a tea pot for my house mates and offer it around to them. There is strength in numbers and its a great distraction from getting the cafetiere out.

Pushing through tired times will be a struggle, but stick to it! It's like jogging for the first time, the first half is pure pain but it gets easier and you can quickly feel the results.

Have some variety, I found that the same cup of breakfast tea just couldn't cut it. Try fennel or peppermint, switching up the taste will keep you interested and with a fantastic selection in most supermarkets you'll never run out of flavours to try!

Of course coffee will always have a special place in my heart, but now I can appreciate it. For me it's a treat not a necessity.

What kind of person are you, tea or coffee? Have you made the switch?
